IDNR Illinois Biodiversity Squirrel Study Resources

IDNR Squirrel Cybrary

Squirrel Data Collection Survey

Sample Habitat, Prediction and Monthly Reports

IDNR Illinois Biodiversity Squirrel Study Activites

  1. Let's Learn About Squirrels
Students review the Squirrel Cybrary to learn about the anatomy, habitat and life cycle of squirrels.

  2. What Are We Looking For?
Students learn about the squirrels (the target species) that scientists are interested in having data collected for.

  3. Let's Look for Squirrels!
Students determine a squirrel habitat in and around their home and/or school, draw a site sketch, and take photographs of the squirrels and their habitats.

  4. Our Predictions
As with any scientific research, students should learn about the subject (Activities 1, 2 and 3) and then make predictions about the results they will find. Students review the Survey Studio questions and make predictions about what they will discover from the data they are collecting.

  5. The Secret Lives of Squirrels
Students observe, collect data and report on squirrel populations once a week, or more frequently, if possible.

  6. Monthly Squirrel Reports
Each class creates a monthly report summarizing their findings, compares it with their predictions and reviews other class' monthly reports. Their findings will be reviewed by an IDNR scientist.

  7. Squirrels, Squirrels Everywhere!
Students use the interactive map to see where other students are collecting data on squirrels. They review and discuss the reports of classes observing squirrel populations in other parts of Illinois.
