    3. Primary Care

"The sessions of the class Communica-
tions Across Cultures  that helped me the most were the ones that taught me how to talk with parents and patients about difficult issues. The skills we practiced in class made me more confident with my patients."

Providing comprehensive Health Care that is sensitive to the cultural, familial, and individual differences between patients requires more than traditional inpatient residency training. That is why we have launched an innovative program of community experiences, primary care teaching, and communication skills training.

To enhance primary care training, residents have Continuity of Care Clinic two half days each week. By caring for your own panel of patients in a longitudinal fashion under the supervision of dedicated general pediatricians, you will develop your general pediatric abilities on-site at Fantus Clinic and in a variety of community-based centers. While building your skills, you will have an opportunity to foster lasting relationships with families and have a real impact on their lives.

We believe that the vital skills of communication and sensitivity to patients' and families' needs can be enhanced when taught in a comprehensive, ongoing fashion and incorporated into daily interactions. Therefore, all interns participate in Communication Across Cultures (CAC), a course which runs one half day per week for the first six months of residency, where we explore solutions to the communication dilemmas that can arise between patients and physicians. As part of the course, we examine the wide range of ethnic, religious, cultural and economic factors that influence our patient's lives and responses to health care. We role-play, interview youth and parents, hold panel discussions to enhance communication skills and provide training in Medical Spanish.

Rotations in Adolescent Medicine, Child Development and Child Advocacy, HIV Medicine, and Community Health emphasize the skills taught in CAC as well as the more traditional skills taught in residency training. We stress prevention, counseling, working with patients and families, and learning about community resources.
