The Life of Luigi "The Penguin" Pirandello Born in Agriento, Sicily in 1867, Pirandello was born to a hard working family of prosperous sulfer miners. Luigi first began by writing poetry as a creative outlet. Soon after the arranged marriage to his father's business partener's daughter, Pirandello took up writing as a regular job. Between his and his wife's family, the two had enough money to live comfortably. However, all this later changed after floods wiped out many of his family's mines. Pirandello soon fell into financial trouble and had to go to work as a teacher. He began work at the Normal College for Women in Rome in 1897. He held this teaching position until 1921. It was after this time that Pirandello began to write some of his best known plays. Pirandello is best known for the works that he created between the first and second World Wars.
